Sunrise Has a Paddle
The morning was already underway before most people had their first coffee. A handful of kayakers and paddle boarders were out on the water, moving slowly through the first light and taking their time with the sunrise. I liked getting a closer look at this scene because it feels less like a postcard and more like being there.
You can see the people settling into their boards, the small movements on the water, and that long trail of morning light stretching right through the middle of it all. It has that same feeling I’ve always liked about California mornings by the coast to grab a board, get outside early, and let the rest of the day figure itself out.
I usually prefer my shots without people in them. I like letting the landscape speak for itself and keeping the frame clean. But every once in a while, a scene comes together that just works. Watching these kayakers and paddle boarders sitting out on the water, catching the first light of the morning, was one of those moments. Leaving them in the shot felt right , they weren’t distracting from the sunrise; they were part of it.
