Spread Out
Not every shot needs bright water and postcard colors to catch your eye. This one is a little more raw. Down on the rocky seafloor, a Starburst Lionfish had completely spread itself out, letting those long striped fins and spines do all the talking. At first, the scene might seem a little quiet, but that’s what pulled me in.
There’s something pretty cool about seeing a creature like this completely settled into its surroundings, almost disappearing into the rocks until you actually stop and look. I’ve always liked photographs that make you slow down for a second. No perfect backdrop, no staged moment, just something I happened to come across while diving. A little rough around the edges, a little California attitude, and exactly the kind of scene I like bringing home.
